Block Engineering, is a premier designer, manufacturer, and technical seller of Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) based spectrometers for the detection and identification of gases, liquids and solids. Our markets include the process industries, safety and security, and technical research applications. The company is located in Southborough, Massachusetts (Boston metro area).

Block Engineering is seeking a Director of Manufacturing to lead our manufacturing team and operations as we continue to scale the business for growth. The Director of Manufacturing will be responsible for implementing programs to improve Safety, Quality, Delivery, Inventory, and Productivity. This role requires high emotional intelligence and the ability to successfully work across an organization to achieve results.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Product Delivery: Ensure the production and delivery of the highest quality products with predictable and industry-leading lead times. Assess and develop capacity requirements based on business forecasts and current operational constraints. Recommend hiring plans and capital acquisitions to accomplish capacity expansion. Lead Master Production Scheduling process and work with peers to ensure successful on-time delivery of customer commitments.
  • Quality: Develop and implement processes that are compliant to ISO 9001. Institutionalize processes and metrics that deliver continuous quality improvement. Assess day-to-day quality issues (e.g. Return Merchandise Authorizations, incoming inspection) to determine root causes and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Safety: Implement best-in-class programs and measures to ensure we provide the safest work environment for our associates and that we meet/exceed all required safety standards and certifications.
  • Inventory: Manage the balance of on-hand inventory between production requirements and inventory turns target. Ensure inventory accuracy.
  • Productivity: Design, develop and validate manufacturing assembly and test processes. Work with engineering to develop and implement tools and fixtures to streamline processes. Implement engineering and process changes to improve quality, improve performance, reduce costs or find substitute materials. Establish, with assistance from accounting, procedures to monitor labor costs by operation, yields, and other manufacturing metrics.
  • Product Commercialization: Work closely with Engineering to commercialize and transfer new products to the production environment. Ensure that all required documentation and training materials are developed and implemented. Ensure that other processes such as Engineering Change Orders are followed. Work with engineering to ensure that drawing, bills of materials and other required documentation are current.
  • Systems Development and Maintenance: Support the implementation and maintenance of an ERP/MRP system.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of a BS degree in Engineering or other technical discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in manufacturing management, ideally involving the manufacturing of optical, opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical and/or electro-optical systems.
  • Experienced in lean manufacturing techniques preferred.
  • Experience in ISO 9001 and MRP systems implementation and management.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and related DFT, DFA, DFS would be helpful as well.
